Zittlaus’ Quick Eats

Agriculture & Food Production-Catering-Food & Beverage

For a quick bite on the go or a satisfying meal while spending a leisurely day in Telkwa, Zittlaus’ Quick Eats offers fare that’s NOT your typical fast food. Instead, guests will find cafe-style cuisine made fresh, from scratch. That includes Zittlaus’ hand-cut-and-battered onion rings, fresh (never frozen) French fries (also hand-cut), juicy, exclusive-seasoned burgers made from local beef, BC fish and chips, original-recipe home-made falafels, plus a tantalizing variety of sandwiches made from local ingredients and produce. Zittlaus’ Quick Eats is committed to sustainable food production and believes that food that’s fast can also be food that’s fresh, healthy and deliciously flavourful. Zittlaus’ little red concession is centrally located in downtown Telkwa and open Wednesday to Sunday throughout the spring and summer season.

Meet Al & Evelyn Zittlau

The biggest problem that Zittlaus' Quick Eats has these days is that its customers don't want to see the little concession leave. "We used to do a lot of out-of-town festivals and events," says co-owner Al Zittlau who owns and runs the business along with his wife, Evelyn, and their children. "This year we won't be leaving town as often because our customers like having us around." All in all, it's a good problem to have, and the Zittlaus are grateful for the overwhelming support that the people of Telkwa have given them and their business.

The concession got its start several years ago when the Zittlaus and fellow residents wanted to save their rural school from closure. They began raising money by selling cotton candy, ice cream, snow cones and popcorn. Their efforts were so appreciated that the Zittlaus decided to continue on with their concession business and it grew from there. The Zittlaus run their restaurant on wheels between May and September each year and work hard to produce dishes that meet a few criteria: they have to be portable, they have to be fresh, and the beef has to be locally raised. Zittlaus is one of the rare few that hand-cuts all of its French fries and onion rings, and their customers seem to appreciate the extra attention and the extra flavour.

The Zittlaus live about 20 minutes out of town and choose the rural lifestyle because they wanted to provide a high quality of life for their kids. There's lots of space to play and roam, and it's easy for Al and Evelyn to keep tabs on where their children are. They're also able to farm a little. They used to raise sheep, chickens, turkeys and the occasional beef cow. It's also a fantastic place to just kick back and relax at the end of the day. The couple likes sitting on the deck with a cup of coffee and taking in all the natural beauty out their back door.
